Shoppers hunting electric composter total cost of ownership should add filters and kilowatt-hours before they compare box prices. A $549 countertop unit can cost more to run than a $999 floor bin, depending on carbon refills. Skip electric composters if you already have a free municipal organics cart and you will not use the output.
Figures below use maker-stated kWh, filter intervals, and list prices checked in October 2026. Electricity math uses the U.S. Energy Information Administration’s August 2026 residential average of 18.16¢/kWh (EIA Electricity Monthly Update). Coastal rates can sit well above that average.

Lomi’s FAQ says hardware carries a one-year warranty, and that an active membership on select plans extends coverage to three years. If you cancel, the standard year applies. The $120 membership bill starts about three months after the unit ships, not on day one.
Electricity from published kWh figures
Lomi 3 lists Express at 1 kWh per cycle, Grow at 1.1 kWh, and Cleaning at 0.2 kWh. At 18.16¢/kWh, one Express cycle is about $0.18. Five Express cycles a week is about $47 per year (260 kWh × $0.1816).
FoodCycler’s Eco 5 page lists about 1.5 kWh per cycle. At the same rate that is about $0.27 per run, or about $71 per year at five cycles a week.
Reencle Prime’s spec table lists average 52 W (max 130 W). If that average holds around the clock, the draw is about 1.25 kWh/day, or about $83 per year at 18.16¢/kWh (1.25 × 365 × 0.1816). The unit is a continuous microbial bed, so it is not a per-cycle appliance.
Mill’s public support pages reviewed for this article do not state kWh per night. Do not invent a Mill power cost. Budget a line item after you read the in-app energy screen, if your unit has one.
Filters, pods, and pickup fees
Consumables usually beat electricity. Lomi membership is $120 per year for four filter shipments. Grow mode also uses LomiPods; Express mode does not require a pod on Lomi’s public mode list. This article does not restate à la carte filter SKUs that were not opened at save time.
FoodCycler carbon lasts about 500 cycle hours, or 3–4 months with regular use. Smellier loads (fish, old cheese) shorten that, per the Eco 5 FAQ.
Mill Essential refills are $59 and last up to 5–6 months for a typical user (~$118/year). Mill Plus replacements are $114 and last up to 10–12 months. Optional Mill Pickups are $192 + tax per year if you mail grounds instead of using them at home (Mill filter cost).
Reencle Prime’s carbon filter is $35 and lasts 9–12 months. GEME’s Terra 2 shop page says there is no routine disposable odor-filter replacement and lists Batch 5 at $649. Confirm live GEME refill policy on the shop page before you treat filters as $0 forever.

Example C, Mill Essential with pickups: $999 + $59 filter (after the included one) + $192 pickups. Power unpublished. That is the expensive way to keep food out of a trash bag if you have no garden and no municipal organics.
Example D, Mill Essential, mix grounds at home: $999 + about $118/year in charcoal after the included filter. Owners on r/Reviews and r/righttorepair report that the app and original purchase email are required to run the bin; factor that lock-in, not just the charcoal bag (r/Reviews).

When a cheaper machine costs more
- If you run Lomi Grow with pods and skip membership, extra consumables can exceed Mill’s yearly charcoal even when hardware is $549.
- If FoodCycler carbon is $39.99 CAD but you cycle twice a day, pellet spend rises with hours, not calendar months.
- If a motor fails outside warranty, one repair quote can erase a $100 hardware discount. This page has no repair-price dataset, so treat that as a risk, not a number.
